Wow, what a positive headline to start the year!
And a Happy New Year to you as well Chris, you might say…
If there was a dollar for every post, article, photo or clip from the start of January through to now talking about Goals – personal, professional, financial, anything – we would be able to solve some amazing world problems with the funds.
That’s not to say I don’t love setting goals or see the huge value in setting goals. In fact take time out at the start of every year to write out my goals for the year and reflect back on my goals for the last year – regardless of if I achieved them or not.
It is just that a goal without a plan is just a dream.
And while dreams are nice, they ultimately don’t help you, your family, your friends, your business, your team or anyone else unless they become reality.
Goals become a reality when you create Habits.
Let’s take a look at one of the favourite goals that people look to set at the start of the year – losing weight.
Yes, this is about financial goals, stay with me.
There are countless advertisements on TV, internet and radio at this time of the year talking about programs/services/products that will help people lose weight.
And, if people follow these services to the letter, then they will work.
But most people won’t.
From what I have seen in my 15 years of providing financial advice to people across not just their finances but personal lives, there is one thing that separates successful people who achieve their goals from those who don’t.
What is that one thing?
The habits that these people create and live by in their life.
The daily habits.
The weekly habits.
The monthly habits.
And of course the yearly habits.
If you want to start to lose weight, a habit could simply be to walk every day (maybe just park a bit further away from the office?)
To begin a journey to financial freedom, begin to save 10% of your business revenue or personal income each month.
Live by these habits and stick to them for long enough and you will start to see your results.
Don’t live by them, stop them and, well you know what happens.
Creating and being clear about your goals can be a difficult process. There has been plenty written about goal setting. A simple google search can help you on your journey to setting fantastic and achievable goals.
Or you can check out an article I wrote here (link to article submission #5 – a goal without a plan is just a dream).
The power comes in creating habits and sticking to these habits, even when faced with adversity.
We can all start the year off on a positive frame of mind.
The weather is warm.
We are well rested, well fed and well hydrated…
Our goals can look great, achievable and inspire us.
But its when the weather gets cold, the days short, or the rejections add up that the habits you create now see you power through and achieve everything you want to.
Here’s to your success and a prosperous 2018.
